Our Team

Kathryn Stanton

Owner, National Race Director

Kathryn was born in Belleville Ontario, and moved to BC in 1993. Having not been active while in Ontario, her desire and determination to enjoy the physical pursuits available in BC (hiking, biking, swimming, skiing, running, trail running, adventure racing etc.) lead her to the sport of running. She started road running in 2000, and entered her first race that year. Having competed in several 1/2 marathons, she took on the challenge of marathons and began teaching road running clinics to fellow runners. She entered her first ever trail race through 5 Peaks at Golden Ears in 2002. She loved the sport so much she volunteered to help at all the remaining races that season and began working with the company later that year. In 2004, she and her husband Mark purchased the company and continued her quest to provide an exciting Off Road experience to fellow runners.

David Grant:

David Grant

Southern Ontario Series Race Director

David is excited to join the 5 Peaks team in 2010 as the Southern Ontario Race Director.  Having explored trails from the Yukon to Newfoundland to Arizona, David believes in the 3 Fs of running: Fitter, Faster, and Fun.  Respect your body so it will do what you ask of it, learn from others and always try to improve, and spread the joy of our sport by having a great time.  He knows how wonderful (and a little goofy) it is to be a thirtysomething man addicted to a hobby he first enjoyed as a two year old.  In the past ten years, David has logged over 20,000km of running and over 70 races - from neighbourhood 6Ks to trail ultramarathon.

You can reach David by emailing him at David@5peaks.com. Also, he shares his stories and others' as a writer for iRun Magazine, as well as serving as the magazine's web editor: www.irun.ca

Derrick Spafford

Derrick Spafford

Kingston Series Race Director:

Joining us in 2009, Derrick Spafford is thrilled to be introducing 5 Peaks to Kingston. Derrick has competed in such races as 5 Peaks, Rock and Ice Ultra, Damn Wakely Dam, Mount Washington Uphill Race and Escarpment Trail Run. Most recently, he won his 100 mile debut at the Haliburton Forest Trail Runs. Derrick is passionate about his sport, and has not missed a day of running since 1989.

While Derrick is new to the 5 Peaks team, he brings with him a long career of organizing quality races. When Derrick is not running trails, he keeps himself busy with his business, Spafford Health and Adventure (www.healthandadventure.com), which specializes in coaching, freelance writing, product testing/gear reviews, and snowshoe sales, in addition to race directing.

You can reach him at derrick@5peaks.com

Mike Caldwell:

Eastern Ontario Ottawa/Gatineau Series Race Director

Mike Caldwell joins the 5Peaks team in 2006 as the eastern Ontario race director. Mike has been trail running since his high school cross country team days in the mid 80’s. Having spent 5 years living in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, Mike’s first marathon was the Breckenridge event which has participants running from one side of a mountain ridge to the other and back again! While in Colorado, Mike also ran as a pacer in both the Hardrock 100 Miler and the Leadville 100 Miler racers. Upon returning to Canada in 1999, Mike focused his athletic pursuits on adventure racing, captaining Team Synergy in 36 hour races across Ontario and Quebec.

Although previously a firefighter and advanced care flight paramedic, Mike is now self employed as the owner/operator of Corporate Synergy Inc. Corporate Synergy offers unique outdoor experiential teambuilding activities as well as adventure based training and snowshoe races. Mike has hosted the Mad Trapper Snowshoe Series since 2003 and plans on bringing the same fun and social aspects of this series to his 5Peaks races in western Quebec.
